Independent prescribing for physiotherapists and podiatrists?

The Department of Health has launched two engagement exercises (see here) to seek views about extending independent prescribing to physiotherapists and podiatrists. A range of options is proposed - including no change, and limiting the conditions for, or formulary from which, these professionals could prescribe - as well as prescribing independently for any condition from a full formulary. The thorny issues of controlled drugs, and unlicensed and off-label prescribing, are also raised. The deadline for responses is 26 November; these exercises may lead to formal consultations in the future.
